Architectural Stonework - Rutland Water

This farm, near Rutland Water, was part of a much larger architectural scheme by Smallwood Architects, combining the rebuilding of the main house in a classical stone design with a more contemporary pool house extension, garden courtyard and landscape works.

Carvero’s role was focused on the stonemasonry and installation of selected architectural stonework within that wider scheme.

Working in Clipsham and Ancaster limestone, we installed and finished stone ashlars, limestone ashlar walls, stone arches, voussoirs and a stone vault forming a generous entrance into the garden courtyard. We also installed garden stone steps connected to and conserved and stabilised an old Victorian wall, which became a retained feature within the garden design.

The project brought together old and new: the formality of the rebuilt stone house, the more contemporary honesty of stone, steel, timber and glass around the pool house, and the weathered character of the old wall within the garden.

The stone archway became the strongest part of our work. Built with carefully set voussoirs and a vaulted limestone ceiling, it gives the courtyard entrance weight, order and a quiet sense of permanence. The ashlar stone walls around it provide texture and structure, helping the new work sit naturally within the wider architecture.

Carvero is an architectural stonemasonry company based in Leicestershire, near Leicester, working across Rutland, the Midlands and further afield. We supply and install natural stone ashlar, stone steps, stone copings, stone window surrounds, stone arches and many other bespoke architectural stone elements for new buildings, extensions, garden architecture and conservation projects.
