This barn conversion in Woodhouse, Charnwood, Leicestershire was enhanced with a series of bespoke stone features, designed, carved and installed by Carvero in rustic French limestone. 

The work included internal Tudor-style stone door surrounds, traditional stone fireplaces, reclaimed stone steps and a series of substantial stone arches to the rear of the house, facing the courtyard garden. Each element was carefully considered to sit comfortably within the existing character of the building, adding detail and craftsmanship without making the house feel overworked. 

One of the most distinctive parts of the project was the creation of three new openings within the brick wall of the house. These openings were formed with hand-carved stone arches, creating a stronger connection between the kitchen and the courtyard garden beyond. 

Each opening was formed as a full stone arch, with French doors set within the centre and fixed glass panels continuing into the curved sides of the arch. This allowed the glazing to follow the shape of the stone rather than interrupt it with heavy framing. The result was a clean and generous opening onto the courtyard garden, bringing more natural light into the kitchen while allowing the hand-carved limestone arches to remain the defining architectural feature.

When the property was later sold, the arched stone windows were among the features that gave the house its strongest visual character. They created a memorable connection between the kitchen and courtyard garden, adding the kind of architectural detail that makes a home feel individual rather than ordinary. 

The result is a calm and timeless piece of architectural stonemasonry: practical, understated and full of character. The stone arches bring light, proportion and a sense of permanence to the space, while remaining completely in keeping with the barn conversion.
