Every stone staircase begins with a simple question: what should this house feel like when you walk through it?

For some homes, the answer is a quiet cantilevered stone staircase, built into the wall with very little visible support. For others, it may be a spiral stone staircase with a stronger sculptural presence, or a post-tensioned stone staircase where solid natural stone is made to feel unexpectedly light.

Each approach asks something different of the stone. The proportions, structure, soffit, landings, joints and hand-finished details all have to be considered together, so the staircase feels not only beautiful, but completely right for the building.
