This bespoke cantilevered stone staircase was designed and made by Carvero for a newly built family home near Evesham in Worcestershire. Although the staircase is modest in scale, the design has a calm elegance and a beautifully balanced proportion.
The staircase is arranged as one graceful flight with a 90-degree turn. The winders are carefully set out to create a natural movement through the stair, while the first few steps are gently curved to make the entrance feel softer and more inviting. This small detail gives the staircase a welcoming character as it rises through the home.
One of the most important features is the soffit line. From below, the underside of the staircase follows a soft and gracious curve, giving the stair a light, flowing appearance. The result is a luxury stone staircase that feels refined without being overstated.
The detailing is deliberately simple. The metal balusters and timber handrail give the staircase a classic, understated quality, while allowing the natural stone to remain the main feature. A particularly fine detail is the way the balusters enter the stone treads directly, without visible shoes or cover plates. This requires very careful drilling and accurate setting out, but it gives a much cleaner and more elegant finish.
This project is a good example of how a cantilevered stone staircase does not need to be large or dramatic to feel special. With well-proportioned geometry, carefully arranged winders, a soft soffit line and precise hand-finished details, the staircase becomes a quiet architectural feature within the family home.
