This bespoke cantilevered limestone staircase was designed, manufactured and installed by Carvero for a private home near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. The project is a strong example of how a luxury staircase can be both traditional in character and highly considered in its design.
The staircase has a beautifully inviting opening, with the lower steps widening gently into the room before the flight curves upward. The treads are set out with care, creating a graceful movement through the stairwell and giving the staircase a composed, architectural presence.
One of the defining features is the smooth curved soffit. From below, the limestone underside sweeps upward in a continuous line, giving the staircase a sense of movement and lightness. This kind of detail requires precise geometry, careful setting out and skilled hand-finishing.
The ornate black wrought-iron balustrade gives the staircase a more decorative and traditional character. Its curved scrollwork contrasts beautifully with the calm limestone surfaces, creating a balance between craft, structure and ornament.
A particularly interesting detail is where the stone steps pass close to the window opening. The staircase was positioned so that the profile of the limestone tread can be seen from outside through the glass. It is a subtle architectural moment, but one that shows the level of thought given to the relationship between the stair, the wall and the surrounding openings.
On the first-floor landing, the stonework is kept deliberately simple with a clean bullnose detail. This allows the main curved flight and wrought-iron balustrade to remain the focus, while still giving the landing a refined and carefully finished edge.
