This post-tensioned stone staircase in Warlingham, Surrey, was created by Carvero for a high-end private home close to Croydon and South London.
Positioned at the centre of the entrance hall, the staircase was designed as a calm architectural feature rather than an object that tries to dominate the space. Its gentle curve, solid limestone construction and clear glass balustrade give the hallway a sense of lightness, while still keeping the permanence and quiet presence that only natural stone can offer.
The staircase has the appearance of a floating stone staircase, with each element forming part of a continuous sculptural composition. The curve is soft and understated, allowing the limestone to bring warmth and weight to the interior without feeling heavy.
A post-tensioned stone staircase is different from a traditional cantilevered stone staircase. Rather than each tread being built deeply into a load-bearing wall, the stone elements are carefully brought together as one structural form. Concealed tensioning allows the staircase to span with minimal visible support, giving the impression that the stone is floating while remaining strong, stable and permanent.
This balance between engineering, craft and restraint is what makes post-tensioned stone staircases particularly well suited to contemporary luxury interiors. They allow natural stone to be used in a lighter and more architectural way, without losing the depth, texture and character of the material.
The staircase is finished with a low-iron glass balustrade, set directly into the stone steps. Because the glass is exceptionally clear, it almost disappears, allowing the curve of the limestone staircase and the timber handrail to define the space.
The timber handrail adds a softer, warmer line to the composition. Together with the stone and glass, it creates a staircase that feels refined, balanced and comfortable within the home.
Carvero specialises in bespoke stone staircases for private residences, architects, interior designers, developers and contractors across the UK. Our work includes cantilevered stone staircases, spiral stone staircases and post-tensioned stone staircases, each made with careful attention to structure, proportion, stone selection and installation.
For this Warlingham project, the aim was not simply to create a staircase, but to make a central architectural feature that feels considered from every angle. The stonework needed to be precise, the curve needed to feel natural, and the finished staircase needed to sit quietly within a high-end residential interior.
Located in Warlingham, Surrey, this project forms part of Carvero’s wider portfolio of post-tensioned stone staircases for luxury homes across London, Surrey and the South East.
