Canterbury — Cantilevered Stone Staircase

This bespoke cantilevered stone staircase was designed, manufactured and installed by Carvero for a country home on the outskirts of Canterbury. Set on higher ground with views back towards the historic town, the staircase brings warmth, movement and quiet architectural presence to the interior.

Made from Ancaster Weatherbed limestone, the stair feels naturally suited to its setting: refined, grounded and quietly connected to the surrounding Kent countryside. The stone has a warm British character, with soft variation, subtle fossil detail and a natural depth of tone that changes gently with the light.

Many clients begin by searching for a luxury staircase, bespoke staircase or cantilevered staircase before they have fully considered natural stone. This project shows what stone can offer: permanence, craftsmanship and a depth of character that becomes part of the home itself.

The staircase follows the traditional cantilevered principle, with each stone tread carefully built into the supporting structure. This allows the steps to project from the wall with little visible support, creating a light and elegant effect while retaining the strength and substance of natural stone.

One of the most refined details is the nosing detail, also known as astragal moulding. Rather than stopping at the front edge of the tread, the moulding wraps around each step and continues into the underside of the staircase. Below it, the base of each step is shaped with a gently curved surface, so the moulding and lower profile work together to form a sophisticated soffit detail.

This is where much of the craftsmanship becomes visible. The underside of the staircase is not treated as a secondary surface; it is part of the design. As the flight rises, the repeated moulding and softly curved undersides create rhythm, shadow and movement, giving the staircase depth without making it feel overly decorative.

The metal balustrade and handrail were kept deliberately simple. Their mildly rustic finish brings a quiet traditional character without making the staircase feel heavy or overly ornate. Against the warm limestone, the slender metalwork gives the stair rhythm, restraint and a pleasing sense of craft.

For this Canterbury project, the staircase was created to feel settled within the home and its location. From the stairwell, the tall window frames views across the landscape towards Canterbury, while the warm limestone, simple metal balustrade and softly rustic handrail give the staircase a calm country-house character. It is elegant enough to define the stair hall, but restrained enough not to dominate it.

The result is a high-end staircase in natural stone, designed for daily use, long-term value and a quiet sense of permanence.
