This bespoke cantilevered stone staircase was designed, manufactured and installed by Carvero for a newly converted luxury family home near Walton on the Wolds in Leicestershire.
Set within a modern Georgian-style country house, the staircase was created to feel calm, refined and naturally integrated into the entrance hall. It forms one elegant flight with two 90-degree turns, giving the space a graceful sense of movement without overwhelming the architecture around it.
The winder steps were carefully set out to keep the staircase comfortable to use while maintaining generous proportions and a balanced architectural rhythm. The result is a cantilevered stone staircase that feels both formal and welcoming: a strong architectural feature, but one that sits quietly within the home.
One of the most considered details is the soffit. Rather than creating one completely continuous underside, a fine 12 mm lip was introduced between each step. This small shadow detail catches the light as it moves across the limestone, giving the underside of the staircase depth and interest without making the design feel busy. It is a subtle detail, but one that rewards close attention.
The staircase was made from fine Portuguese limestone, chosen for its soft tone, natural elegance and suitability for detailed architectural stonemasonry. The pale stone sits beautifully against the darker floor, muted wall colour, black balusters and sweeping walnut handrail. Together, these materials give the entrance hall a modern classical feel: formal enough for a country residence, yet warm and comfortable as a family home.
The balustrade and handrail were also carefully considered. The black-finished metal balusters give the staircase a light vertical rhythm, while the walnut handrail adds warmth and movement. The combination allows the limestone staircase to remain the main architectural feature while still feeling fully connected to the interior.
As specialist stonemasons in Leicestershire, Carvero designs, manufactures and installs bespoke stone staircases and architectural stone work for private homes, country houses and architect-led interiors across Leicester, Nottingham, Rutland, Warwickshire, the East Midlands and the wider UK.
With many years of experience in cantilevered, spiral and post-tensioned stone staircase construction, our work brings together architectural design, structural understanding and precise hand craftsmanship.
This project is a clear example of that approach: carefully proportioned design, natural stone, quiet detailing and refined architectural stonemasonry working together to create a staircase that feels as if it has always belonged to the house.
