Lenaboy, Malahide, Ireland - Cantilevered Stone Staircase

This award-winning cantilevered stone staircase offers a modern interpretation of traditional craftsmanship. Its minimalist design, combined with impeccable attention to detail, creates a striking yet understated feature.

A seamless blend of innovation and tradition, this staircase exemplifies the elegance of bespoke stonework at its finest.

This award-winning cantilevered stone staircase was created for a contemporary family home in Malahide, County Dublin, overlooking the Irish Sea and Lambay Island.

Hand-carved from Portuguese limestone, the staircase combines traditional cantilevered construction with carefully resolved modern detailing. Most of the stair was installed using the classical cantilever method, while the lower three steps were pinned and post-tensioned together before being lifted into position as a single element.

The design is defined by its calm, continuous geometry. A disciplined stone apron follows the stairwell as a clean ribbon of limestone, while the refined tread profiles, subtle changes in direction and carefully integrated balustrade create a staircase that feels both precise and quietly elegant.

The contrast between the pale limestone, vertical black metal balusters and warm timber handrail gives the staircase a restrained contemporary character, while still respecting the permanence and craft of traditional stonework.

Recognised at the Stone Federation Natural Stone Awards 2022, this project demonstrates Carvero’s ability to deliver complex bespoke stone staircases where craftsmanship, engineering and architectural detail are inseparable.
