Cantilevered Helical Stone Staircase in Knowle, Solihull

Batts Hall in Knowle, Solihull, is a high-end new-build family home with a stone staircase at the centre of its architecture. Rising from the basement to the second floor, this three-flight cantilevered helical stone staircase gives the house a quiet sense of arrival and permanence.

This project belongs to Andre Schuberth’s early specialist staircase work and forms part of the experience that later shaped Carvero’s approach to natural stone staircases. Before Carvero was established in its current form, Andre and his team carried out the specialist installation of the staircase, bringing together careful setting out, stone handling and a deep understanding of how a cantilevered staircase should feel within a home.

The staircase turns gently through the height of the stairwell, with pale natural stone, a warm timber handrail and a slender black metal balustrade working together as one composition. It does not feel like a staircase added into the house. It feels as though the home was always intended to have it.

The helical form gives the staircase its movement. From above, the treads draw the eye down through the open centre of the stairwell. From below, the shaped stone soffit gives the staircase much of its depth and character. This underside detail is one of the most important parts of the project: a continuous curved stone form with a subtle projecting lip between the treads, creating shadow, rhythm and refinement.

A cantilevered helical stone staircase relies on more than beautiful stone. The supporting structure, geometry, fixing points and installation sequence all have to be carefully considered. When these elements are resolved properly, the finished staircase can feel effortless — solid, graceful and quietly confident.

The timber handrail brings warmth to the pale limestone and gives the staircase a more tactile, domestic character. The black metal balustrade adds fine vertical rhythm, while the decorative polished collars introduce a subtle traditional detail without overwhelming the simplicity of the stone.

Together, the stone, timber and metal create a staircase with presence. It is practical, but it is also emotional: the kind of architectural feature that changes how a home feels the moment you enter it.

Carvero designs, makes and installs bespoke stone staircases for private homes, architects, designers and contractors across Knowle, Solihull, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Leicestershire and the wider UK.
