Set within the living room of a remarkable private home near Wrexham in North Wales, this freestanding spiral staircase is made entirely from natural stone. It connects the main living space with the wine cellar and garage below, becoming part of the family’s everyday routine — down to the car in the morning, or to choose a bottle of wine in the evening.

At 4.45 metres from floor to floor, it is the tallest freestanding spiral stone staircase we have designed and manufactured to date and, as far as we are aware, one of the tallest of its kind in the UK. Its scale gives it real presence, yet the curve remains beautifully proportioned within the room.

The circular upper landing was treated as more than a practical point of arrival. Together with the stone newel post, it feels almost like a piece of architectural furniture. We suggested engraving the first letter of the house name into the newel cap — a small, personal detail that belongs only to this home.

The staircase is perhaps most surprising when viewed from below. One of the details we still notice is how remarkably thin the outer edge of the soffit appears. This slender line makes the mass of the stone seem almost improbable, giving the spiral staircase a delicacy that is difficult to reconcile with the strength and weight of the material.

Achieving this effect required every tread, joint and curve to be considered as part of one complete form. The individual stones work together, but the eye reads the finished staircase as a single piece of architecture.

This Wrexham spiral stone staircase is substantial without feeling heavy and distinctive without overwhelming the living room. It shows what a stone staircase can become when its structure, proportions and details are developed together around the house and the people who live there.
