Positioned within the living room of a remarkable private home near Wrexham, this freestanding spiral stone staircase creates an elegant connection to the wine cellar and garage below. It offers a beautiful way to move through the house — whether going down to the car in the morning or choosing a bottle of wine in the evening.
At 4.45 metres from floor to floor, it is the tallest freestanding spiral stone staircase we have designed and manufactured to date, and one of the tallest installed in the UK that we are aware of. Its height gives the stair a real sense of presence, but the flowing geometry keeps it graceful and refined within the living space.
The upper landing was designed as more than a practical arrival point. With its circular stone form and carefully resolved newel post, it becomes part of the room — almost like a piece of architectural furniture. To make the staircase more personal to the home, we introduced the idea of engraving the first letter of the house name into the stone newel post cap. It is a quiet detail, but one that gives the stair identity and a stronger connection to the family who live with it.
The soffit is one of the most striking parts of the staircase. From below, the underside of the stone forms a continuous sculptural surface, giving the stair its sense of movement and lightness. It is a detail that shows how a solid natural stone staircase can feel elegant, fluid and beautifully composed.
This is not simply a route between floors. It is a bespoke luxury staircase in natural stone, designed around the daily life of the home. The result is a freestanding spiral stone staircase that feels sculptural, practical and deeply personal.
