This bespoke spiral limestone staircase was designed, manufactured and installed by Carvero for a luxury family home in Desford, Leicestershire. Set within a modern classical extension to an old farmhouse, the staircase was carefully positioned to create a natural flow between the main living space and the upper floor.

The design is based on one of Carvero’s signature spiral stone staircase concepts, originally developed from our deVOL Kitchens showroom staircase at Cotes Mill. For this private home, the form was refined to suit the architecture, the interior and the quiet character of the house.

The most striking feature is the seamless helical soffit. From below, the staircase reads almost like a piece of sculpture: calm, continuous and beautifully balanced. This curved stone underside is one of the defining details of a well-designed spiral staircase, requiring careful geometry, precise setting out and skilled hand-finishing.

As daylight moves through the house, the limestone changes in tone, revealing soft natural markings and subtle variations across the curved surface. In the morning it feels pale, crisp and architectural; later in the day it becomes warmer, softer and more atmospheric. This is one of the quiet pleasures of using natural stone in a staircase: the material is never completely still.

Every detail was carefully considered. The stone landing details, curved treads, central limestone newel post and flowing underside are all resolved as one continuous composition. One particularly beautiful moment is where the timber handrail meets the limestone newel post, bringing warmth and craft into direct conversation with the stone.

The staircase sits comfortably within the modern classical interior. It has presence, but it does not dominate the room. Instead, it becomes a centrepiece that quietly belongs to the house — a sculptural limestone staircase that connects the spaces while adding grace, movement and permanence.

The same limestone language continues through the home, with the fireplace and floor tiles working in harmony with the staircase. This creates a calm and coherent interior where the stone feels natural, intentional and timeless.
